What's a Creative Cafe?

Come through for a chance to get social and engage in play. We'll set up various creative stations with activities, which you can opt in/out of, to your comfort. This is a choose your own adventure event. The idea is to explore, unwind and connect with others.

What's the vibe?

Black girl magic all the way. A safe and energizing space. A stunning space with faces like ours.

Who should attend?

Black women. Build Out Loud is for black women creatives, entrepreneurs, business owners, intrapreneurs, anybody who has a to-do list and wants to get it done!

Where are we going?

This event is hosted at WiseTown Cafe, which is a lovely

Cost?

This event costs $10, which will cover the cost of supplies and materials to set up the creative stations and to guarantee your spot.

We'll have on hand some light refreshments, and are encouraging all attendees to take advantage of some of the event specials or other options on the Wise Town Café menu!

#plenty23 - YOUR YEAR IN REVIEW

Wrap up 2023 aka #plenty23 with us ! We love this time of the year, and even though it's the thick of holiday season, it is so important to pause and reflect, so we can make space for joyful moments, big and small.

Why #plenty23?

So much happened for you this year, friend! We'll be reflecting on what this year has brought us and allowed us to uncover about ourselves.

What will we do?

Build Out Loud will lead you through a guided reflection in this event. You will receive a beautiful digital workbook with 20 themes to help you find and record the bountiful moments from this year.

You will leave with insights and inspiration, as well as a completed yearbook, and a letter to your future self.

What's the vibe?

Black girl magic all the way. A safe and energizing space. This event will allow for personal time with the benefit of community by your side.

This will be a guided, facilitated event with our favourite beats gently playing in the background to keep us focused!

Who should attend?

Black women. Build Out Loud is for black women creatives, entrepreneurs, business owners, intrapreneurs, anybody who has a to-do list and wants to get it done!

Where are we going?

Creative Coffee Collective is hosting a pop-up with our FAVE, Eight50 Coffee, which is a Black-woman owned coffee company right here in Ottawa.

Cost?

This event costs $20, which will cover a coffee or a latte, a pastry, and our beautiful digital workbook. The workbook will be sent to you in advance, so that you can have it ready to work on your laptop, or print it out.

Your donations keep the BUILD OUT LOUD community running! BUILD OUT LOUD is a program under Black Ottawa Connect, a non-profit organization in the Nation's Capital Region (Ottawa, Canada).

BOC Goes Camping

Black Ottawa Connect invites you to make the most of summer with a camping trip that includes hiking, water activities, games, campfires and, of course, fun…all in with amazing Black adults!

You don't have camping equipment? No problem! To make our lives and access to this event easier, we are collaborating with Ottawa Outdoor Gear Library to provide you with all the camping essentials, so NO EXCUSES :)!

Here's what you need to know…

· When: August 12 at 12:30 p.m. until August 13 at 2 p.m.

· Location: Rideau River Provincial Park (2680 Donnelly Dr., Kemptville, ON)

· Cost of the activity: $45. This includes transportation, parking, camping gear, site and river craft rentals.

· What to bring: In collaboration with OOGL, BOC will provide all the camping essentials (tent, sleeping bag, sleeping pad, stoves, chair, life jackets, dishes and more). If you wish to bring your own gear, you are welcome to do so. You will still need to bring your own personal items including food and drinks. We also encourage you to bring games that can be played with the group.

· Who can come: This event is strictly for Black adults who want to have fun with members of our community. Please note that we have a limited number of spaces and we're pretty sure we will sell out. Don't wait too long to sign up!

· How to get there: We will provide a carpooling system. Please indicate in the ticket section if you would like to be a volunteer driver or if you need a ride. The meeting point for departure is the Ottawa Outdoor Gear Library (877a Boyd Ave). This will facilitate the gear pick up and loading of the vehicles.

Communications will be sent out later in the summer to make logistical arrangements and to share additional information about preparing for the camping (detailed list of belongings, tips and tricks, group breakdown, schedule, etc.).

Join us for an energetic total body workout developed to burn calories, shape and tone your entire body, increase core strength and improve bone health using a formula of light weights and high repetitions. Certified BODYPUMP™ instructor and BOC Let's Move Program Lead, Nadia McKenzie, will coach you through the moves and techniques pumping out encouragement, motivation and great music. We guarantee a great sweat!

On Saturday, June 10th, join us for Brunch & Bloom: A Playful Celebration for Black Women at Studio 20/20, where we will host brunch, as well as activities and games. These games will provide an opportunity for you to unwind, connect and celebrate.

The aim of this event is to provide a space where Black women can come together, celebrate their achievements over this past year, and relieve stress through play.

BOC Let's Move: Bootcamp

BOC Family, are you ready for a challenge? Join us Saturday, June 3 at 9am as Nadia McKenzie, certified Les Mills BodyPump Instructor and MetCon trainee, leads us through an epic Bootcamp workout 🔥.

BOC Let's Move Bootcamp will be a MetCon workout combining strength and endurance training with low rest for an intense conditioning workout. A fun way to move your body with other members of the BOC family!

Please note : this event is for 18+ only

Level: All levels are welcome - modifications available

Duration: 45 mins- 1 hour

Location: Mooney's Bay 2960 Riverside Dr. 

Gear: Black Ottawa Connect has limited dumbbells and therefore we are requesting you bring weights, if you have, for this session - light to medium weights are suggested (5 to 15 lbs). Feel free to bring two sets of different weights.

Please bring a yoga mat and tons of water to stay hydrated!

The Rooted & Resilient Program provides doula care and breastfeeding support from a trauma-informed lens that is rooted in culture and provides opportunities for parents to grow, learn and connect to help foster resiliency and better early parenthood experiences in the Ottawa-Gatineau Black community.

About this event

The Date with a Doula event is an opportunity for future, currently expecting, and new parents to learn about doula support provided by the Rooted & Resilient program and how to access local resources to assist them on pregnancy, birth, and/or early parenthood journey.

What to expect?

The event is 1.5 hours long, which will be split into two parts. The first part is a presentation on doula care and community resources available. The second part parents will have an opportunity to ask questions to our Program Coordinator and Doula, Jessica Johnson.

Who should come?

Black individuals who are planning to be parents, who are currently expecting, and parents of infants.

Cost: Free

Donations will be accepted as well! Suggested donation for this event is anywhere from $5 to $20 to help keep the Rooted & Resilient program running. Rooted & Resilient is a program under Black Ottawa Connect, a non-profit organization in the Nation's Capital Region (Canada). Due to the success of the first event, the BOC family goes BACK to archery games!!

Have you ever wanted to go back in time? Maybe shoot a bow and arrow? We can't time travel but we can try some combat archery! Kind of like dodgeball meets paintball...but with a bow and arrow!

Black Ottawa Connect invites you to come out and compete in some archery games at Archery Games Ottawa. Come on your own or bring a friend!

What is CO-WORK & CHILL?

Co-work and chill will be a 2 hour time slot to get STUFF DONE!

What can you expect?

We spend the first 30 minutes talking about a subject/theme.

The next 45 minutes we allow everyone to go into deep work - working on any project or tasks you bring with you!

Once we are done, we will share takeaways and what we achieved while in deep work. This has been a fabulous way to connect and network!

Welcome to Money Monday$, a Black Ottawa Connect initiative, created with the intention of increasing confidence by breaking down financial concepts and empowering our community to achieve their dreams! This month's theme is "Surviving and Conquering this (Possible) Recession!"

Community members will be able to learn from a group of experts from our very own community in evening. This will be an opportunity to better understand the current economy and what a possible recession could mean. Attendees will walk away with information, strategies and tools to maintain their financial security while also building their financial wealth. A possible recession does not mean we have to fall behind. We can THRIVE!

Who should attend?

This virtual session is for adult members of our Black community interested in gaining knowledge, strategies and tools to navigate the current economy.

Who are our panelists?

Philippe Marie-Jean-Robert is a Portfolio Manager and the founder of Kwajamii Financial Inc., an independent firm that provides both financial planning and investment management services to Ontario residents. Philippe holds several designations, including the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) designation, the Qualified Associate Financial Planner (QAFP) designation, and the Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation.

Davene Sterling-Wisdom is a dedicated and detail-oriented accounting and tax specialist. With over 10 years experience, she has been meeting the accounting and taxation needs of corporations and individuals. Davene currently owns and operates SWF Solutions Inc., an accounting and taxation firm, where she not only prepares taxes but educates business owners and individuals, helping them to obtain all their financial solutions. Davene is also our BOARD TREASURER!

Sebastien Joachim has been a Wealth Associate at National Bank Financial since 2017. As a pillar of his team, he ensures rigorous monitoring of portfolios and assists clients in financial and retirement planning. In 2021, he won the very prestigious Elite Club award, which nationally rewards the 30 most deserving Wealth Associates across the country.

BOC Kids: Unlocking STEMM

We are so excited to invite you and your young ones to join us at Ottawa U on Saturday March 11th at noon.

We welcome young ones aged 10 and above! We will be able to participate in a creative and collaborative workshop together. Parents and kids, tweens and teens are invited to join us as BOC Kids and BYiS (Black Youth in STEM) are going to tour the University and their STEM labs as well as take part in hands on activities, see cool stuff and learn what it is like to be a STEM student at Ottawa U. Some of the highlights of the day include a coral reef tank and an earty science activity in Ottawa Us Geo Lab.

What is CO-WORK & CHILL?

Co-work and chill will be a 2 hour time slot to get STUFF DONE!

What can you expect?

We spend the first 30 minutes talking about a subject/theme.

The next 45 minutes we allow everyone to go into deep work - working on any project or tasks you bring with you!

Once we are done, we will share takeaways and what we achieved while in deep work. This has been a fabulous way to connect and network!

Who should come?

BOC Let's Move: Snowshoeing

BOC Let's Move: Snowshoeing

What to expect?

This session includes the snowshoes and access to the trail network and is lead by Kanata Nordic’s knowledgeable volunteers. We don’t use poles.

No experience required!

We’ll be exploring the snowshoe trail network at a leisurely pace. Wear comfortable winter boots (no heels) to attach the snowshoes to and dress warmly (toque, gloves or mitts, warm socks).

Pack a water bottle since there is no running water onsite. You can wear a small backpack or waistpak on the trails if you like.

Washrooms are porta-potties. There’s a small cabin to warm up in but we’ll be outside most of the time.

Light snacks will be provided at the end.

Who should come?

This event is for Black people of all ages. This is a family friendly event.

LIMITED SPACE AVAILABLE. If you register, please be courteous by attending the event or emailing our team to update your availability so we can open the registration to our waiting list.

DEEP WORK ZONE by Build Out Loud is a dedicated event for getting important stuff done using deep work principles amongst other Black Women 👩🏿‍💻

What can you expect at this event? Join facilitators Meron & Stacey-Ann as they quickly guide you through deep work concepts. Then, we will go into the deep work zone where you can work on any projects or tasks you bring with you!
