COVID-19 Resources for our Community

Race-based data shows that Black Canadians are far more likely to get sick and be hospitalized for COVID-19 than any other ethnic groups. In Ottawa, people who identify as Black make up 37 per cent of cases, but just 7 per cent of population. We have compiled some resources that might help our community stay healthy and safe!

Anti-Black Racism was already a Pandemic

Anti-Black racism is defined as prejudice, attitudes, beliefs, stereotyping or discrimination towards people of Black-African descent. Anti-Black Racism shows up in in the day-to-day experiences of Black Canadians, including in the Ottawa-Gatineau region. It is the other pandemic, one that has been raging far longer than COVID-19 has. We have compiled some community resources that might help you learn more.

Let’s Talk: COVID-19 & Our Community!

We know that the COVID-19 pandemic has been hard on communities of colour, and particularly the Black Community. So, we talked about it on Saturday March 27th.

This conversation allowed for our community to sit down with Black medical professionals and have an informal and easy chat around COVID-19, the COVID-19 vaccines and ways we can keep healthy during this pandemic. We were pleased to welcome: Saynab Hassan (Project Officer Ottawa Public Health), Dr. Lian Peter (Family Physician), Dr. Kwadwo Kyeremanteng (Critical Care + Palliative Care Physician) Dr. Pamela Kapend (Family Physician + Emergency Medicine) and Dr. Catherine Newry (Naturopath).
